About this resource
The World Bank Service Delivery Innovation Team and the GFF Secretariat organized an online webinar to discuss immediate Kangaroo Mother Care for low birth weight infants. The vast majority of neonatal deaths (70%) worldwide occur in low-birth-weight infants making this population a key target for service delivery improvement. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) after a newborn has been stabilized is already recommended for this high-risk population, with studies showing 40% lower mortality in those receiving the intervention. The WHO Immediate KMC Study Group has now shown that initiating continuous KMC immediately after birth confers an additional survival benefit over the conventional approach of waiting for the infant to become clinically stable. Survival in low birth weight infants receiving immediate KMC improved by 25%.
